How Performing Arts Build Confidence in Chicago Kids

Discover how Chicago kids build confidence, creativity & life skills through Stages Chicago

By Stages Chicago August 18, 2026

When you think about performing arts for kids, you might picture singing, dancing, costumes, and playing pretend. And while those are certainly part of the fun, the benefits of performing arts extend far beyond the stage.

At Stages Chicago, we’ve spent the past 10 years watching children discover their voices, build confidence, form friendships, and develop skills that stay with them long after the curtain closes.

It’s About More Than the Performance

Performing arts education gives children a unique opportunity to learn by doing. They aren't simply listening to a teacher or memorizing information; they’re moving, creating, collaborating, problem-solving, communicating, and taking risks in a supportive environment.

When children learn lines from a script or lyrics to a song, they are developing literacy, memory, focus, and communication skills. When they experiment with voice, movement, and expression, they are building skills that translate directly into public speaking, presentations, and everyday communication.

And perhaps most importantly, performing arts give children a safe place to try, fail, try again, and discover exactly what they’re capable of doing.

Building Confidence One Step at a Time

Confidence doesn't happen overnight. For many children, it starts with something small: raising a hand, trying a new character, singing a little louder, or stepping onto a stage for the first time.

At Stages, we see those small moments add up.

A child who was once hesitant to speak in front of a group eventually volunteers to perform. A student who was nervous about messing up their audition learns it's okay to make mistakes. A child who didn't think they were “good at theater” may discover that they have a talent for storytelling, design, technology, costumes, or leadership.

The goal isn't to make every child a professional performer. It's to help every child become more confident in who they are.

Performing Arts Teach Kids How to Work Together

Theater is a team sport.

Putting on a production requires actors, singers, dancers, directors, designers, technicians, and countless other people working together toward a common goal. Kids learn quickly that everyone has an important role to play.

Through performing arts, children practice:

  • Listening and communicating with others
  • Collaborating and compromising
  • Solving problems creatively
  • Taking responsibility
  • Giving and receiving feedback
  • Supporting their peers
  • Adapting when things don't go according to plan

These are life skills that children will use in school, in relationships, in careers, and in countless situations throughout adulthood.

A Place to Be Your Creative Self

One of the most powerful aspects of the performing arts is that there isn't always a single “right” answer.

What should this character sound like? How should this scene feel? How can we tell this story? What happens if the original idea doesn't work?

Kids are encouraged to make choices, explore ideas, and think creatively. They learn that their perspective has value and that sometimes the best ideas come from trying something completely new.

At Stages Chicago, we also believe that performing arts should be a place where kids can be themselves. Whether a child loves being center stage or prefers to work behind the scenes, there is a place for them to contribute and shine.

The Skills Go Far Beyond the Stage

The confidence a child develops in a theater classroom doesn't disappear when they leave the building.

It can show up when they give a presentation at school, introduce themselves to a new friend, try out for a team, interview for a job, lead a group project, or simply speak up when they have something to say.

That’s one of the reasons we love what we do at Stages Chicago. We aren't just teaching kids how to perform. We're helping them develop life skills to help them confidently navigate the world around them.

Celebrating 10 Years of Helping Chicago Kids Find Their Voice

This year, Stages Chicago is celebrating 10 years of bringing performing arts education to Chicago children and families.

Over the past decade, we've welcomed thousands of young people into our classrooms, camps, productions, and programs. We've watched shy preschoolers become confident performers, elementary school students discover new passions, and teenagers take on leadership roles and responsibilities they never imagined for themselves.

We've also learned that there is no single way to be a performer and no single reason to participate.

Some kids come because they dream of Broadway. Some come because their best friend is in the class. Some love to sing and dance. Others discover that they love writing, directing, costumes, sets, marketing, or technical theater.

And some simply need a place where they can feel comfortable being themselves.

That's Stages.
